Diemersdal lies on the cool slopes of the Durbanville wine region, one of Cape’s oldest wine regions with a record for excellence in wines, the result of the region’s unique terroir. Ancient soils of decomposed granite with a moisture-retaining clay component are an ideal base for a number of grape varieties. Climatically, Diemersdal’s proximity to the cold Atlantic Ocean to the west ensures a temperate climate with mild summers and cold, wet winters where an average rainfall of 700mm per annum is experienced. During the summer months a persistent cool breeze from the south-east ensures Diemersdal’s vines escape the heat of summer with even-ripening of healthy fruit one of the farm’s features. Some 200ha of Diemersdal are planted to a variety of cultivars, with Sauvignon Blanc being the dominant variety.
Diemersdal has been named Winery of the Year in the Platter’s Guide to South African Wine 2026, earning an unprecedented six Five-Star awards across both red and white wines. For an estate founded in 1698 and farmed by the Louw family since 1885, the accolade is a landmark moment, seen as one shaped by centuries of continuity, dryland viticulture, and the distinctive cool-climate terroir of Durbanville.
